In my view - We have the right to know

I have been requested, by a number of people, to comment on articles that have appeared in the Echo, about the saga surrounding the parliamentary additional cost allowances (ACA) of Dr Julian Lewis Conservative MP for New Forest East.

'During the past year he has failed to make his expenditure of taxpayers money public.

Although Lewis has not broken any parliamentary rules, I find something quite curious about this ‘flip flopping’ designation of main and second homes for “economic reasons”, especially when so many of our residents are living on or close to the poverty line.

I also find it difficult to understand how his £400,000 flat in London, where he lives with his partner, who works in the Capital five days a week, is not his main home.

It may well be that many fellow MPs do the same thing but does that make it right?

However, something I consider of more significance, has emerged from the furore surrounding allowances and keeping addresses secret.

In a statement made by Lewis as a rebuttal to the News of the World article on his expenditure he said, “ For many years, both before and after becoming an MP, I have been involved in work against political extremists at home and abroad.”

We have a right to know what work Julian Lewis has been doing against political extremists, especially whilst paid as the Conservative MP for New Forest East and just who has sanctioned it.

I also believe we need a clear explanation about why Julian Lewis is the only person in the whole of the New Forest out of an electorate of 130,000 who is registered anonymously on the electoral roll.

Former Service personnel, senior police officers and other persons with sensitive backgrounds live in the New Forest.

Why does Lewis have such a unique need to remain anonymous?

One might also ask if anonymity is consistent with such a high profile occupation as Member of Parliament.

As Dr Lewis’s political opponent I am greatly concerned about his claimed secret activities.

I have therefore written to the Head of MI5, MI6, the Chief Constable of Hampshire and David Cameron the Leader of the Conservative Party and requested they clarify Julian Lewis’s claim in respect of where and when he has been involved in work against political extremists whilst a New Forest MP and just who such extremists are considered to be.
