The historic victory for the Liberal Democrat motion on the Gurkhas in the House of Commons was described today as a victory for justice, by Totton North Hampshire County Councillor Alan Weeks.
Alan had been actively campaigning for a change in the law on how Britain treats the Gurkhas. He said, “Yesterday was a great day for the Gurkhas and for the Liberal Democrats who led this fight for natural justice.”
Liberal Democrats have been campaigning for Gurkha Veterans to have the right to live in Britain for a number of years and are delighted with the Parliamentary vote.
New Forest Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate for New Forest East, Colonel Terry Scriven, served in 48 Gurkha Brigade in Hong Kong.
Like Joanna Lumley whose father was an officer with the Gurkhas he knows them first hand.
Terry says, “This is an amazing victory on behalf of very brave people who have given so much support to our country in times of need, often paying with their lives to protect us".
Lib Dem Leader, Nick Clegg, said, "This is an historic victory for the Gurkhas who have served our country so bravely. This Government has now lost its moral authority. From the first moment I challenged Gordon Brown on this over a year ago, he didn’t understand that there was a simple moral principle at stake".
"People who are willing to die for our country, should be allowed to live in our country. The Government must listen to Parliament and scrap these shameful rules immediately and grant justice without conditions to all retired Gurkhas."
