The New Forest District Council is to urgently investigate details of contracts awarded to a number of construction companies following fears that taxpayers may have been swindled out of thousands of pounds.
More than one hundred construction companies have been accused of conspiring to rig thousands of public sector contracts worth billions of pounds. The Office of Fair Trading formally named 112 companies that it says colluded to inflate the cost of a wide range of contracts.
In a question to the Council Leader at this week’s full meeting of the District Council, Lib Dem Councillor David Harrison, established that some of the construction companies named by the Office of Fair Trading have been awarded contracts by New Forest District Council.
Councillor Harrison was successful in calling upon the Council to urgently review the contracts in order to protect the interests of local taxpayers. He says “We need to look very carefully at these contracts once again to find out whether any of the contactors involved have been ripping off local taxpayers. I look forward to seeing a full report once investigations have been completed”. |
