| Parliamentary Candidate Terry Scriven talking about energy saving lightbulbs |
New Forest Liberal Democrats have welcomed the government's initiative to phase out traditional light bulbs by the year 2011, in favour of energy-efficient bulbs.
By the year 2011, only energy saving light bulbs will be sold in shops and supermarkets. It’s estimated that this will stop 50 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere every year. Although the new bulbs are more complicated and less energy efficient to manufacture their savings out outweigh their carbon footprint, by an average of 0.04 kW each per hour.
A traditional bulb, which has been around in British homes for well over 100 years produces light by sending electricity through a very thin wire called a filament, this also produces a high amount of heat which is wasted electricity.
The energy-saving bulbs, called "compact fluorescence" put the electricity through a gas inside the bulb. This generates ultraviolet light which, when it hits the white coating of the bulb, produces a normal light. It is three or four times more efficient than traditional light bulbs.
Parliamentary Candidate, Terry Scriven says; "These light bulbs use much less electricity than traditional tungsten bulbs. They are better for your pocket and for the environment. This is something the Liberal Democrats have been promoting for years. The Labour and Conservative parties are only now jumping on the green bandwagon". |
