The New Forest District Council have rejected plans by Linden Homes that would have meant the loss of two sports fields in Totton.
Councillors on the District Council planning Committee heard a long list of objections from local people, before deciding to reject the plans
The controversial application would have led to half of the former BAT sports ground in Southern Gardens being covered with housing, the loss of the entire football ground, currently occupied by AFC Totton and new structures, including a stadium and floodlighting, built on open fields north of the town.
Speaking at the planning meeting, Cllr. Alan Weeks, said “The loss of such important remaining green space in Totton is clearly quite unacceptable”.
Liberal Democrats in Totton were first to oppose the plans, distributing a petition that attracted thousands of signatures objecting to the plans.
Fellow Lib Dem Councillor, David Harrison says “There is a need for more affordable housing in the New Forest area. We also need to assist the football and cricket clubs. However, these proposals run directly against the agreed local plan which is designed to protect remaining green areas we have left in Totton. I’m pleased that the Councillors on the planning committee have rejected the application”. |
