New Forest Towns may be spared the misery of the abandoned shopping trolley, thanks to Councillor, David Harrison.
The Totton based Liberal Democrat Councillor has been working to prevent the supermarket shopping trolley from being taken from stores car-parks and left in the streets, on waste ground and even in local rivers. In meetings with store bosses,
Cllr. Harrison urged management to tighten up procedures to prevent people from removing trolleys from the store car-parks. He has now asked the New Forest District Council to get tough with Stores that have failed to live up to earlier promises.
At a meeting of the Council Cabinet today, members considered and approved of a motion put forward by Councillor Harrison calling on the Authority to use new powers under The Environment Act which could lead to heavy fines if the problems persist.
Cllr. Harrison also wants the new police presence on the streets, including Accredited Community Safety Officers and Police Community Support Officers to be more pro-active in helping reduce the problem.
Cllr Harrison says “I’m really pleased that New Forest District Council has agreed to get tough at long last. In towns like Totton and Ringwood, the problem has been a significant one for some years. Many a trolley has ended up in a river or a ditch or blocking a pavement.
This leads to a health and safety issue when it comes to recovery. Blocking up ditches has led to flood problems. Apart from that, it is unsightly. It’s a nuisance we can all do without”. |
I have wheeled several tolleys back to Asda ove the years and made several calls to get them collected so anything you can do to make them stop the problem will be brilliant. Why can't we make them adopt the money in the slot system at our store. Certainly they should not buy any new trolleys without the coin system.
