Like many of you, I recently attended a Remembrance Day ceremony. This year I was in Totton. There appeared to be a much greater public awareness, probably due to the sacrifices our Servicemen, women and their families are making as a result of the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
There is little doubt that support for the Royal British Legion’s campaign ‘Broken Covenant’ is ensuring a greater awareness of the need for better accommodation for service personnel, better medical facilities and better post service support. It is however easy to forget.
In my support of the Royal British Legion at a national level and in my work with the Soldiers, Sailors, Air Force Association (SSAFA Forces Help) in the New Forest, ex-service personnel and families who served in Europe in the Cold War are telling me they feel forgotten.
There were no medals of recognition for this outstanding victory yet the threat posed by the Soviet and Eastern Block countries threatened our very existence. Hundreds of service personnel died on duty during this war and hundreds more had to leave the service due to their injuries.
The grieving and the sorrow suffered was no different for their families than that felt by those bereaved in current conflicts. The hardship no different for those disabled by their injuries as they try to lead a normal life.
Today sees the launch of the New Forest Liberal Democrat Campaign to get the Government to recognise the contribution made by service people and their families through the issue of a Cold War victory medal for those who served in Europe from the Second World War until victory in 1989.
Please support this campaign by emailing Terry at terryscriven@btinternet.com and marking your email ‘The Cold War Campaign Medal’.
Terry Scriven is the prospective Member of Parliament for New Forest East, a former Colonel in the Army, a member of the Royal British Legion and a caseworker for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help in the New Forest. |
