Lib Dem Councillor, Alan Weeks, has called on the Conservatives to put politics aside and concentrate on becoming a greener council.
Speaking at a meeting of the Cabinet at New Forest District Council this week (Wenesday 6th June), Cllr. Weeks expressed regret that the local Tory party had made political capital during the recent election campaign by highlighting the unpopularity of introducing wheelie bins – something that may yet be necessary if the authority is to continue to meet government recycling targets.
Cllr. Weeks said “Now the elections are over, we need to look seriously at all the options open to New Forest District Council. It’s clear, that we cannot continue as we have been. It’s about saving the planet, not saving your council seats”.
The District Council are currently just about meeting government targets of recycling household waste (set at 30%). However, expert consultants have examined the clear plastic bag collection scheme and warn that the present system is unlikely to deliver enough improvement to keep pace with government targets in future years. |
