The Lib Dems have delivered a crushing blow to the Conservatives in the New Forest town of Totton, by winning all four seats in a by-election held yesterday.
The election was a re-run of the election that was due to be held on May 3rd, cancelled because of the death of a Lib Dem candidate.
The Conservatives had won the majority of seats elsewhere in the town and had been crowing about taking control of the Town Council, (previously run by the Lib Dems for an unbroken 20 year period).
This new election result changes the political map of Totton again. Each party now has 10 seats on the Town Council.
A jubilant Cllr. Alan Weeks, Campaign Manager for the Lib Dems said “What a difference a month makes!
The Lib Dem team were determined to bounce back from a disappointing run of District election results. We felt most voters were tired of getting leaflets from political parties with a lot of negative, attacking messages. We therefore ran a positive campaign, telling voters what we planned to do for the good of the town. The approach seems to have worked really well. I’m quite stunned by the size of the majorities”.

Terry Scriven, the Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate for New Forest East, had helped deliver leaflets and knock countless doors in the north Totton ward. He says “I’m thrilled and very encouraged by this result. The people of Totton have elected four excellent Lib Dem councillors who will work really hard for the benefit of the town”.
