New Forest Councillor, David Harrison, has made a last ditch attempt to prevent a new waste transfer station being located at Marchwood.
The campaigning Lib Dem Councillor has been at the forefront of campaigning against the proposals that will see a new waste transfer station based at the sight of the old incinerator, an ugly building that is due to be demolished later this year.
Marchwood Parish Council, supported by New Forest District Council, wants to see the site restored to agricultural use. However, Veolia, the waste company seeking to develop the site into a new waste transfer station were given the go ahead by the Conservative controlled Hampshire County Council, despite strong local objections.
In his capacity as County Councillor for Marchwood, Cllr. Harrison spoke at two consecutive meetings of the authority’s Regulatory Committee. The company won the day because the committee could find insufficient planning reasons for denying them a consent.
In a last bid to stop the scheme going ahead, Cllr. Harrison has now appealed directly to the Leader of Hampshire County Council, Cllr. Ken Thornber, to intervene and stop the scheme from proceeding.
Cllr. Harrison says “The Members of the Regulatory Committee seemed to accept that Marchwood has already suffered from too much undesirable developments like this. I have written to Ken Thornber pointing out that the County Council own the land and can still block this scheme. There are other, more suitable, sites that are not located in Marchwood village”. |
