A last gasp effort to save a New Forest village from having to endure the development and operations of a new waste transfer site appears to have failed.
The Conservative Leader of Hampshire County Council, Ken Thornber, has written to the Lib Dem County Councillor for Marchwood, Cllr. David Harrison, confirming that he will not intervene to stop the development from going ahead.
The decision will not be welcomed by Marchwood Parish Council or the New Forest District Council. Both authorities raised objection to the proposals which will mean a new large building being developed on the site of the old waste transfer station. It had been generally understood that the site would be restored to a green field once the old building had been demolished.
Councillor David Harrison had battled hard with other local councillors in an attempt to persuade the Tory administration not to grant permission, including two separate pleas to the County Council Regulatory Committee. He says ”Marchwood has already enough to endure. The village is bordered by an industrial estate, an energy from waste facility, a household waste recycling facility, a sewerage works, the biggest military port in the UK and a power station (under construction). I take the view that enough is enough”.
