Conservative Councillors on Totton & Eling Town Council have been forced into a humiliating climb-down over the issue of dog mess bins.
Tory Councillors had tried to commit the Town Council to a policy of providing no more dog mess bins in Totton.
However, at the last meeting of the full council, with 10 Liberal Democrat members challenging 10 Conservatives, the authority agreed to review the decision following complaints from local people that many pavements in Totton are still regularly ruined by the presence of dog mess.
Last night, a Tory U-turn was completed, when one Lib Dem Councillor after another condemned the policy, referring to the need for the New Forest District Council to clarify its policy on the use of bins, that a survey be conducted into the areas of the town where dog mess is a particular problem and funds be set aside at budget setting time for the provision of more bins, where needed.
A delighted former chairman of the authority, Cllr. David Harrison, said “This is a great result. Wherever we see a dog mess problem, we must stamp on it”.
If you, the reader, live in a New Forest town with a dog mess problem, please tell us using the feedback form on this page and a local Liberal Democrat representative will get onto it. (Joking aside, this aspect of irresponsible dog ownership is a very serious matter with grave consequences for health and safety.) |
