Lib Dem controlled, Fawley Parish Council, have been involved in talks aimed at securing the future of the Gang Warily Recreation Centre.

The loss making facility is causing a huge financial strain on the authority. Cllr. Ron Lewis and the other Liberal Democrats, along with the Gang Warily Centre Manager, are researching ways of revamping the existing Gymnasium.

The Gang Warily facility was constructed at a time when Fawley Parish Council benefited from local business rates, boosted by the presence of the nearby Esso Oil Refinery. The former Conservative government changed the system so that the funds went to central government, only to be re-allocated elsewhere.

Councillor Lee Dunsdon says “ The Lib Dems have only recently inherited this problem from the previous Conservative administration. They appear to have kept their heads in the sand. It might make sense for Gang Warily to be taken over by the New Forest District Council because they already manage five other Health and Leisure Centres. I anticipate benefits due to economies of scale and the wealth of experience they have in running successful facilities.”

The outcome of these early talks is in doubt because the Conservatives on the New Forest District Council are currently considering privatising or part-privatising all the Health & Leisure Centres.
