Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Campaigner, Terry Scriven, has called upon all authorities in the New Forest area to improve their record on going green.
Terry says “The New Forest should be leading the way on environmental issues. There are some very good initiatives, but a great deal more to do, especially when it comes to waste minimisation and re-cycling”.
The Campaigning Terry Scriven has been impressed by Totton Town Council, who are undertaking a special green audit to ensure that all operations are considered from an environmental point of view. In particular, it is hoped that a new web-site will include Council minutes and agendas, saving the need to print out and post thousands of documents each year.
However, Terry is less than impressed by the amount of unnecessary waste generated and transported around the area. He says “Almost every one agrees that commercial organisations are producing far too much packaging, especially on food products and why are local supermarkets still giving out millions of plastic carrier bags?”
Terry Scriven wants also to see a much greater degree of waste re-cycled. At the moment, a very large number of items such as yogurt pots and plastic packaging cannot be re-cycled and goes into landfill or is incinerated. Terry adds “The New Forest should and could be leading by example. I’m going to make it my business to praise the good things, whilst pointing out the failures”. |
