| Parliamentary Candidate Terry Scriven talking to Bill Catt |
Terry Scriven, Parliamentary Campaigner for the New Forest Liberal Democrats, has been on a fact-finding mission, concerned about the risk of flooding.
With climate change, it is now widely accepted that low-lying areas are more at risk from flooding. Recently, substantial areas of the country were flooded during one of the wettest months of July on record.
Earlier in the day, Terry was shown that the flood defences in nearby Marchwood had yet to be completed and was quite shocked to find that the sea wall at the waterfront had just come to a halt, waiting for New Forest District Council to complete the defences.
In Totton, Terry learned from local residents that homes had already been flooded in the past, notably in the Eling area. The Environment Agency have special monitoring equipment located in the Eling Tide Mill, intended to give early warning if flooding looks likely.
Terry says “I’m really concerned about this. Very few people seem sure what to do if the worst happens. There are hundreds of homes at risk from a flooding incident. I think a lot more needs to be done in terms of minimising the risk of flooding and communicating with local people as to what to do, in the event that it happens”.
Councillor David Harrison, Lib Dem Member for Totton South, says “Terry is right. Recent events elsewhere have suggested that the flood risk in Totton is a higher priority than was previously realised. I am pushing for the subject to be discussed at a meeting of the Town Council, as a matter of urgency”. |
