Terry Scriven, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Campaigner, has paid a visit to Eling Tide Mill, the oldest working tide mill in the world.
Accompanied by local Councillors, Alan Weeks and David Harrison, Terry was given a guided tour of the mill and learnt about the international importance of the facility, a listed building that is operated by a local Trust.
The Town Council own a Heritage Centre, on the site of an old steam mill, located directly opposite the tide mill. Ambitious plans are being drawn up to link these and a number of other features of the area to provide local people and tourists with the chance to sample the “Eling Experience”.
Whilst at the mill, Terry took the chance to find out about how local flour was produced. It carries the New Forest Mark. The mill supplies flour to a number of local outlets, including some of the really high-class hotels and restaurants in the New Forest area.
Terry says “The Tide Mill only survives today by a series of very lucky circumstances. It’s an incredibly rare part of our national heritage and is still making an important contribution to local community life today, as well as being a unique tourist attraction”.
