| The New Forest District Council is being asked to review the continued use of sun-beds at Council run Leisure Centres.
Lib Dem Councillor David Harrison, has overcome the refusal of the Conservative Leisure Scrutiny Chairman to put the item up for discussion on the agenda, by utilising a little used rule that any member can ask for an item to be included on an agenda by direct application to the Chief Executive.
Previously, the Conservative administration has voted down any efforts to have the matter reviewed or put under scrutiny.
The matter comes up for discussion at the Leisure Scrutiny Panel, next Tuesday, 12th September at 9.45am, Committee Room 1 at Appletree Court, Lyndhurst. Councillor Harrison has invited any member of the public concerned about the issue to come and speak or simply to listen. Anyone wishing to speak should ideally notify the committee administrator, Melanie Dunsmore on 023 8028 5379.
Councillor Harrison says "If the Conservative administration is properly concerned about public health, the Leisure Portfolio Holder should be asking the Scrutiny Panel to review this policy. Shamefully, the Scrutiny Chairman, (also a Conservative), declines to scrutinise this policy.
I shall be telling them that about 65,000 people in the UK suffer from skin cancer each year. About 2,000 cases prove fatal. We cannot ignore the risks of sun bed usage and should be seriously questioning whether the District Council should be in the business of making money out of this risky cosmetic business". |
