Resignation of Mark Oaten MP
Last updated Sunday, 22nd January 2006
The odds on Chris Huhne MP getting elected as Party Leader have dramatically improved, following the decision of Mark Oaten MP to withdraw from the contest. It is now a three way battle between Menzies Campbell, Simon Hughes and Chris Huhne.

Mr Huhne is probably the best known to New Forest party members because he was the local MEP for six years before being elected as the Member of Parliament for nearby Eastleigh constituency.

In an informal straw poll of local members, Chris seems to have the best chance of gaining the most votes from this area. The District Council group recall that Chris took the trouble to visit them on the run up to the last Euro elections, offering a lot of sensible advice. Local activists also appreciate that Chris joined them while out campaigning in Totton, spending several hours knocking on doors and talking to potential voters.

Party President Simon Hughes has also visited the New Forest twice in the past two years. Mr Hughes opened up the Campaign headquarters here for the last General Election before undertaking a really vigorous "meet the people" session in Totton. He came back a few months later and assisted our Parliamentary Spokesman, Brian Dash , attracting plenty of media coverage on the issue of the Hythe ferry.

Menzies Campbell has not visited the New Forest in any campaigning capacity. However, there are many local members who recognise that he possesses a great deal of experience and is widely acknowledged as a voice of reason, especially on foreign affairs.

Here are a few quotes from party members about the forthcoming election for a new party leader:

Parliamentary Spokesman, Brian Dash, "I will be voting for Chris Huhne. All three candidates would do a great job but I think Chris offers the best blend of experience, youth and campaigning ability."

Lib Dem Campaigner, Mike Robinson, from Hythe "I will vote for Chris because of his positive contribution on the European stage. I think he provide a fresh approach and carries no political baggage."

Chris Smith, an Activist from Dibden Purlieu says "I have yet to make up my mind because I want to hear more from the candidates. However, at this stage, I think I would give Chris Huhne my first choice vote".

Tony Grey, a New Forest Lib Dem and member of "Friends of the Earth" says, "Simon Hughes will be getting my vote. I have been a long term admirer and believe he will do the most to take measures to protect the environment"
