| Young people in Totton and surrounding areas have further cause to celebrate, following the news that a BMX track has been approved by the planning committee of the New Forest District Council.
The popular Totton & Eling Town Council Park already provides some of the best skateboarding facilities in Hampshire.
The addition of a BMX track will cost a further £79,000, using cash raised from developers' contributions.
The Lib Dem Town Council, which has a richly deserved reputation for provision of quality amenities, were concerned that the plans would be scuppered by objections from the neighbouring Netley Marsh Parish Council who expressed fears about the prospect of increased anti-social behaviour in the area.
However, members of the planning committee heard that the area would be subject to surveillance, both from community safety officers and CCTV. Vice Chairman of Totton & Eling Town Council, Councillor David Harrison, says "I don't think the planners had much sympathy for the objections raised.
The nearest properties to the site are 90 metres away and a BMX track for young people is not going to attract much car traffic. I'm delighted that this scheme will now go ahead".
Councillor Len Harris, Chairman of Amenities says "Young people helped in the design of this scheme. I'm sure it is going to prove really popular and I anticipate less problems from young people with things to do, not more". |
