Bins V Bags…… Which would you choose?

New Forest Liberal Democrats are opening up the debate on whether it would be better for the local council to collect household waste using bins, or whether to stick with the existing scheme of using plastic bags, transparent ones for recycling material, pink for non-recyclables.

The hot issue appears in an issue of "Focus" which is currently being delivered to over 10,000 homes in Totton. The Lib Dems are also organising a public meeting to be held at Totton Community Centre, doors open at 7.15pm, on Tuesday March 7th.

Amongst the speakers will be Cllr. Louise Bloom, the Executive member for the Environment on Lib Dem controlled Eastleigh Borough Council. Eastleigh uses bins and has one of the best recycling rates in the country.

From the New Forest, Cllr Steve Shepherd, an acknowledged expert on waste management, will be speaking. It is hoped that the meeting will also give a chance for the public to express their views, one way or the other.

Maureen Robinson, Leader of the Lib Dems on the District Council says 'We know New Forest residents are keen to recycle and that they also are keen to preserve the current black bag system. There's also the problem about what will currently be accepted for recycling and how its measured. The whole debate is very complex and we all need to understand it better so that we can do our best for the environment.'
