A major Sports ground in Totton has been sold off to a private developer. The B.A.T. ground in Southern Gardens has been sold by British American Tobacco to Linden Homes in a £3 million deal.
The surprise move has raised fears that the ground will be boarded up and that the current use as a sports ground and leisure facility will cease.
Chairman of Totton & Eling Town Council, David Harrison says "I'm disappointed to find that B.A.T. have disposed of this land so quickly to the highest bidder. This is something that the company told us that they would not do. Obviously, there is no planning permission to build housing on this site. I have already written to Linden Homes, requesting an early meeting. The vast majority of local people want this important area of land retained for community use".
Fellow Councillor, Alan Weeks, says "BAT disposed of the site before we could formally present them with the petition with thousands of signatures on it. We must now concentrate on reminding the new owners of the social aspects of this new purchase. If at all possible, we must keep the land open for recreational use".
